If you're concerned about missing teeth but hesitant about getting dentures, the compassionate team at Family Dental Care of Wilmington is here for you. Trust our expert dentists to offer you the finest dental implant solutions in Wilmington, NC, helping you restore your smile with confidence and care.
Dental implants are a long-lasting treatment for missing teeth. Implants look and feel like real teeth, and you can treat them just as you would your real teeth, from the way you eat food to the way you perform oral hygiene. You won't have to change anything about your dental habits to keep your implants clean and in working order - your standard brushing and flossing routine are all you need.
Dental implants consist of screws, abutments, and crowns. The screws and abutments are made from a titanium alloy that is highly biocompatible with the human body. Crowns are usually made from ceramic because this material does a good job simulating natural enamel and it allows us to easily customize the shape and size of the tooth to fit your mouth and interlock with your other teeth.
The complete procedure takes several weeks, depending on how well your body heals. We begin by implanting the titanium screw into your jawbone in place of a natural tooth root. This is the part of the procedure that requires healing. Your jawbone will need time to grow back around the screw, at which point it will establish a firm root and foundation for your dental implants.
The abutment, as part of the screw, will remain exposed, protruding from your gums. Once the screw has securely taken hold, we will install your new crown. The crown installation doesn't create any need for healing, and you can start using your new teeth right away. Multiple implants may be installed at once, depending on your finances and your body's ability to handle the procedure.
